Saturday, April 25, 2009, family and friends of Katie Royster and Dwight Willett gathered in the courtyard on the campus of the International Storytelling Center to celebrate their union as husband and wife.
Martha, the mother of the bride, says that wanting a unique location is what led them to the Historic Town of Jonesborough, and ultimately ISC. The number one thing that attracted them was that Jonesborough is the oldest town in Tennessee and offered a unique historical aspect to the wedding.
The courtyard is what really drew Katie to the Mary B. Martin Storytelling Hall according to her mother. The bride was set on having an outdoor wedding, and to her mother’s delight, ISC also provided a nice indoor alternative in case of less than perfect weather.
The couple was brought together in the midst of the lush and beautiful spring scenery of the courtyard. The reception was held in the parlor, which offers a breathtaking view of the historic town from the balcony. A path of guests lighting the staircase by way of candles led the happy couple to a horse drawn carriage that carried them off to begin their new life together.
Martha remembers this day as a perfect spring wedding. “It was beautiful, we had great weather and it was a perfect place to celebrate with family and friends,” she says.
Martha and Maurice, the father of the bride, thought the overall experience was great. “The staff was enthusiastic, helpful, and a good source of ideas for our event. If they didn’t know the answer they would find it. Every wedding needs some sort of uniqueness and the staff were somewhat flexible with the rules to try and accommodate our requests. Plus it is wonderful that there is a superb caterer across the street,” they said.
Katie and Dwight now reside in Fort Worth, Texas. When asked if she had any words of wisdom for others planning their wedding, Martha said, “Try to make it personalized, find something that you want to do that would show the personality of the bride and groom, not just a party with fancy dresses.”
